The municipality of Paris wants to deter SUV
owners from using the streets of the French capital, by a new measure that the
city councilors recently voted, which will allow a great rise at the charges of
car parking in the public parking stations, especially for SUVs. The new
charges for car parking inParis will be determined by the size, the weight and
the motor of the vehicle. Frédéric Badina-Serpette, a councillor from the EELV
ecology party that proposed the increased charges, said: “We would like the
city of Paris to change the pricing of paid parking to make it progressive
according to the weight and size of vehicles.” Recent surveys showed that
during the last four years the number of SUVs in the streets of Paris has been
raised by 60%, and those kind of vehicles are known for emitting larger amounts
of gases due to their size, their weight and their large internal combustion
engines that they are equipped. David Belliard, a deputy mayor responsible for
public space and mobility policy, said SUVs were incongruous in an urban
environment. “There are no dirt paths , no mountain roads … SUVs are absolutely
useless in Paris. Worse, they are dangerous, cumbersome and use too many
resources to manufacture,” Belliard said.
Nevertheless, electric vehicles and those
with large families requiring a bigger car are expected to escape the increased
fees that will come into effect on 1 January 2024.
